Former Marshfield Clerk of Courts Appears in Wood County Court for Theft
Tuesday, May 10th, 2022 -- 2:00 PM
(Mike Leischner, WSAU) The case against the former Marshfield City Clerk of Courts will move forward.
According to Mike Leischner of wSAU, Susan Carlson did not enter a plea on Monday to multiple counts of theft in a business setting, but the new judge in the case did find probable cause to move the case forward.
Carlson is accused of taking tens of thousands of dollars in fines and citation payments and funneling them into her own personal accounts, instead of passing them on to the city's finance office.
Many of those funds came in the form of cash payments. City officials are still trying to determine the extent of what was taken, but previous reports show the number could exceed 70 thousand dollars.
The thefts are believed to have happened over a five year period between 2015 and late 2020. Carlson retired from the clerk of courts position in 2021. The case came to light after her replacement found irregularities in the city's books, sparking a year-long investigation.
During Monday's hearing, Carlson also answered questions for the court about activities from her bank accounts. She returns to court later this month.
