(Wisconsin Ag Connection) With 3.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the past week, farmers were able to make some progress with their spring planting activity.
According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, that's according to the latest crop/weather report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, which stated many farmers in the northern part of the state were finally able to enter the fields with heavy equipment, while growers in the south planted oats, corn and soybeans.
Topsoil moisture level conditions were rated one percent very short, six percent short, 75 percent adequate and 18 percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 29 percent of the spring tillage was complete. That's three weeks behind last year and 10 days below the five-year average.
Seven percent of the corn is now in the ground, which is 12 days slower than last year and 11 days behind normal. Soybean planting is also behind scheduled at just six percent complete.
Farmers now have 30 percent of the oats seeded, with seven percent emerged. And in the central sands region, potato growers have about half of their spuds planted as of this week.
