Tomah Middle School’s Chess and Gaming Club sent its first student ever to participate in a Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation sanctioned tournament at Spring Hill Elementary School in Wisconsin Dells this past Saturday, April 9th.

Gavin Libbey, a 6th grader, competed in the 6-12 grade division, where he played five rounds against students who were all two to six years older than him. During the first round, students are paired with an opponent.

They may win, lose, or draw. When their match is over, they leave the competition room to wait in a gathering area, where they eagerly await their parings for the next round. Rounds may last up to one hour.

Each subsequent pairing is determined according to the player’s performance in the previous rounds. In his first round, Gavin proved to be a formidable opponent.

Although that match ended in a loss, he stuck with his competition and was one of the individuals still playing in the final two matches of the round. Gavin went on to record a win in round 5.
