Wisconsin Rapids Man Now Charged in Connection With the Death of a Spencer Man

A Wisconsin Rapids man has now been charged in connection with the death of a Spencer man back in 2020.

On December 29th of 2020, the body of 20-year-old Christian Schauer was found dead in a wooded area of McMillian Marsh near Spencer. Three people, Jared and Shawn Carl as well as Amber Benson, were arrested for their connections with the murder.

However, back in January, Steven Crandall asked to speak with investigators. He told them he had offered $5,000 to have Schauer killed due to Schauer allegedly stealing prescription pills that Crandall had intended to sell.

Crandall said he made contact with three men a couple weeks before Schauer’s death. He did not identify the men, but said two were black men and the other was hispanic.

He said his dealer assisted in coordinating with the men and he was given a picture of Schauer’s body after his death. Crandall appeared in court on Friday and is facing charges of 1st degree intentional homicide.
