(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Governor Tony Evers is investing 50 million dollars of federal stimulus funding to improve crime prevention programs and clear the backlog of criminal cases in Milwaukee.
Evers says some of those funds will go towards mental health support. "Just like many states across the country Wisconsin is seeing an increase in substance use disorders and overdoses and more reports of mental health challenges like anxiety, stress and depression."
Calling it a public health issue much like COVID-19, Evers says more needs to be done to prevent violence before it starts. "We want to build a Wisconsin that works for everyone. That means communities where families not only have the support and the resources to be successful but that future where our kids and our families can be healthy and safe."
Milwaukee in particular has seen a spike in violent crime.
