(Wisconsin Ag Connection) America's Dairyland stayed true to its name last year as the state set another record for total milk production.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, the latest government figures from the USDA confirmed that Wisconsin farms produced 31.7 billion pounds of milk in 2021. That was 3.1 percent more than the previous record of 30.7 billion harvested in 2020.

Milk per cow also rose to an all-time high of 24,884 pounds in Wisconsin, up 461 pounds from the year earlier. The total number of milk cows at year's end was around 1.27 million head, approximately 11,000 more than the previous year.

As of January 1, there were 6,533 licensed milking herds in the state. That was 399 less than the same time in early 2021. Nationally, dairy farmers produced 226 billion pounds of milk, which was a 1.3 percent increase over 2020.
