Governor Evers Joins Other Democratic Governors in Requesting the Federal Tax Gas Be Suspended
Thursday, March 10th, 2022 -- 1:00 PM
(WRN, Tasha Redel, MNN) Governor Tony Evers and Democratic counterparts in five other states, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, are urging leaders of Congress to suspend the federal gas tax for the rest of the year.
In their letter, Walz, Evers and fellow governors cite "financial stress caused by increased gas prices amid international crises and rising inflation", and specifically point to Russian President Vladimir Putin's "horrendous attacks on Ukraine."
The governors propose 118 billion general fund dollars be transferred to the Highway Trust Fund to keep it solvent and protect the federal government's capacity to make infrastructure improvements to roads and bridges.
They say "a federal gas tax holiday is a tool in the toolbox to reduce costs for Americans."
