Thursday, March 30th, 2006 -- 4:12 PM
A man authorities say murdered his wife nearly 2 ? years ago finally made his initial appearance in Clark County Thursday afternoon.Bond was set at $1-million cash for 34-year-old Daniel Peterson.
Prosecutors allege he killed his wife, Vickie, two years ago on New Year?s Eve night or early on New Year?s Day before driving from Neillsville to Black River Falls and then hitchhiking to Illinois.
The alleged stabbing occurred at the couple's Ayers Street, Neillsville home.
Peterson was arrested on January 1st, 2004, in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines, Illinois, after allegedly trying to rob a bank and kill a police officer with a knife.
The case in Illinois dragged on, preventing Peterson from facing homicide charges here in Clark County.
But Peterson reached a plea deal in January with Illinois state prosecutors. He pleaded to reduced charges of attempted aggravated battery of a police officer and attempted armed robbery and was sentenced to six years of additional prison time.
Peterson is now back in Clark County where he made his initial appearance Thursday on the charge of 1st-degree intentional homicide.
With the victim?s family in the courtroom, Peterson waived the time limits to his preliminary hearing and didn?t object when Clark County District Attorney Darwin Zwieg requested a $1-million cash bond.
A status conference has been set for April 20th as Peterson?s attorney, William Poss, requested time to review Illinois court documents pertaining to his client?s competency to stand trial.
