State Assembly Approves Bill Requiring School Districts to Hire Resource Officers Under Certain Circumstances

(Bob Hague, WRN) The state Assembly approves legislation to require school districts to hire a school resource officer under certain circumstances.
It’s from Delafield Republican Cindi Duchow, who says many schools need the officers. “Last semester at Madison East High School, there was a fight that broke out that entailed more than fifty students. A third of the student population didn’t come to school the next day because they were afraid."
"Nothing replaces someone who’s in the building on a regular basis, getting to know the students. They’re quicker at knowing where the problems are going to occur, they can stop the problems before they happen, and when there is a problem they can get to the bottom of it sooner.”
Under the bill, if a district reports 100 or more violent incidents and at least 25 arrests in one semester, an armed school resource officer would have to be hired. The Madison and Milwaukee districts terminated their School Resource Officer contracts in 2020.
