TRG: GREENWOOD SNOWMOBILE BRIDGE WON'T HAPPEN
Friday, March 24th, 2006 -- 1:53 PM
The TRG is reporting Clark County will likely return over $225,000 in state money tabbed for building a snowmobile and winter ATV bridge over the Black River near Greenwood.Numerous complications have popped up since the County was awarded the money in 2002. The estimated cost of the bridge has jumped from the grant amount to a current estimate of $420,000.
Greenwood?s City Council decided they didn?t want to spend additional money to address floodplain problems construction of the bridge might create. That decision will likely result in the return of the grant money and the end of the project, the paper reports.
Clark County ATV/Snowmobile coordinator Brian Duell says the problems arose when the DNR found the proposed bridge might hold back floodwater during an extreme flood. While the original grant was awarded for a 225-foot span, it?s now clear a 285-foot span would be needed to prevent flood problems.
The City of Greenwood has already spent around $4,000 on the floodplain issues.
