METH DUMPSITE FOUND IN CLARK COUNTY

Officials say people need to be careful after another meth dumpsite is found in northern Clark County.

Scott Haines, an investigator with the Clark County Sheriff?s Department, says a resident this week alerted authorities after finding a meth dumpsite. Meth is a drug made by ?cooking? an extremely toxic concoction of chemicals. The resulting byproduct is also toxic, and often discarded near roadsides.

?They?re usually liter-sized bottles or bigger with multi-colored liquids,? Haines explains. ?The ones that were reported on Monday were orange on the lower portion, and lighter on the top.?

If you come across what might be a dumpsite, you should contact authorities. Don?t try to clean it yourself. If found outdoors, officials wear protective equipment, such as gloves and masks; if found indoors, labs will only be cleaned by officials wearing Level ?B? Hazmat suits.

To date, three discarded labs have been found in Clark County: two just south of ST Hwy 29 near Owen and one in the Town of Mead.

Haines says residents should also be on the lookout for certain behavior that may indicate meth production in their neighborhood.

?The mixing of unusual chemicals, late night activity in rural or farm areas and possession of unusual chemicals such as cold or allergy medications,? Haines says. ?It?s nice (if the public) can advise us exactly what type of chemicals they did see.?

Meth production in the area is actually believed to be decreasing, but usage isn?t. 90% of the drug used locally is imported from Mexico, Haines estimates.
