A pair of Wisconsin lawmakers are introducing a bill that would require the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to offer scholarships and grants to those looking to become truck drivers.
According to Wisconsin Ag Connection, Sen. Eric Wimberger of Green Bay and Rep. Treig Pronschinske from Mondovi say their measure would establish a scholarship program that would pay for up to 50 percent of the cost of tuition for commercial driver training programs. If trucking companies train drivers themselves, the bill would require WisDOT to offer grants reimbursing employers for up to half of those costs. The legislation would also create grants of $500 for individual drivers that stay with their trucking company/employer for more than a year.
Groups such as the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association, the Wisconsin Auto & Truck Dealers Association and Cooperative Network have all publicly supported the bill.
