Wisconsin Leads the Nation in Number of Milk Goats

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Wisconsin continues to lead the nation in the total number of milk goats.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, as of January 1, the USDA reports that the state's total dairy goat count was 74,000 head, which was up three percent from early 2021.

The agency also reported that the state's sheep and lamb inventory as of January 1 totaled 82,000 head, down 4,000 head from a year earlier. Total breeding stock, at 66,000 head, was down four percent from last January. Market sheep and lambs decreased six percent for the year at 16,000 head.

The 2021 lamb crop was estimated at 60,000 head, unchanged from the previous year. Wisconsin's wool production for 2021 was 320,000 pounds, down seven percent from 2020, with fleece weights averaging 6.8 pounds.
