A failed referendum has led to ?desperate times? according to Colby?s superintendent.Thursday?s Marshfield News Herald reports the district is exploring closing two elementary schools by next fall.
Last week, voters in the district narrowly defeated a $500,000 revenue cap exemption referendum. Now, superintendent Terry Downen says the board is considering closing the Unity Early Learning Center and the Dorchester Elementary School. The 250 displaced students would go to Colby Elementary School.
Downen says the move could save the district around $408,000 of the $600,000 needed to be cut for the 2006-07 budget.
The district is planning a public forum in each of the affected municipalities.
