Troubling TikTok Post Has Schools Increasing Police Presence Today
Friday, December 17th, 2021 -- 7:05 AM
A troubling TikTok trend has some school districts, including local districts, on alert.
The post refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” today, Friday, December 17th. The post appears to be part of a national TikTok trend and several school districts have heard of it.
While it is not believed the threat is credible, several districts are closely monitoring the situation and taking it seriously. For example, the Neillsville Police Department will be increasing its presence at the Neillsville schools today.
They will have additional officers on-duty assigned to patrol the schools. The School District of Abbotsford has been in contact with the Colby-Abbotsford Police Department regarding the post and they may have an increased police presence in their buildings today as an added precaution. Even districts in Eau Claire and Wisconsin Rapids will have an increased police presence due to this post.
This situation serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for students, families, and staff.
Families are encouraged to monitor their children’s social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online. If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member or trusted adult right away.
