Wisconsin Milk Production Rises in October

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Total milk production in Wisconsin rose during October when compared to the same time last year, the eighth straight month of consecutive increases.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, that's according to the USDA's latest milk production report, Wisconsin farmers produced 2.65 billion pounds during the month, up 2.7 percent from last October, but lower than the 2.60 billion made in September 2021, which had less days on the calendar.

Nationally, 17.7 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a slight 0.3 percent decrease from 2020, but higher than the previous month's 17.3 billion.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.90 million head, 4,000 head more than October 2020, but 15,000 head less than September 2021.

The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head, about the same as last month, but 21,000 over last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,990 pounds, which was six pounds per cow less than last year's figures.
