Apprentice Tuition Tax Break Bill Heads to Governor Evers' Desk

(Bob Hague, WRN) Legislation ready for the governor’s consideration would give non-union apprentices a tax break on required classes.
Assembly Democrat Katrina Shankland of Stevens Point noted unions already cover costs for training centers that offer apprenticeships, while this bill is supported by non-union contractors.
“I don’t believe in an unlevel playing field. I don’t believe government should be creating disincentives away from some of the best training facilities in the nation.”
River Falls Republican Shannon Zimmerman said the tax break will help smaller contractors. “The little guy here maybe does not or can not participate in some of the union, maybe they choose not to. And so this gives them an option to seek and obtain the necessary training.”
The bill, if signed by Governor Tony Evers, would allow apprentices to deduct tuition expenses from their state income taxes.
