(Bob Hague, WRN) Do your homework before hiring a snowplow contractor this winter.

Lisa Schiller with the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin says it’s recommended that you get at least three estimates before hiring. “Ask for all the costs up front to avoid any surprise expenses. And keep in mind that the lowest price doesn’t always mean the best service.”

Schiller says be cautious of contractors requesting all the money upfront. “Consider that a little bit of a red flag. Most contractors will split the fees which is what BBB recommends, that you pay in two or three payments, one at the beginning, one in the middle and one at the end of the season.”

Schiller also stated, “This is one of the industries that we always see requesting in full payments up front. So the Better Business Bureau recommends that you check with the company, as far as do they want you to pay per plowing, or pay per season. And if you choose a pay per season contract, remember in a light snow season, the contractor’s not obligated to refund any money.”

The Better Business Bureau provides background information, complaint history, and resolution to complaints at bbb.org.
