Greenwood School Board Approves Tax Levy at Annual Meeting

A small audience and the Greenwood School Board approved the proposed tax levy at the District’s Annual Meeting on Monday.

A tax levy of $2,326,328 for the General Fund and a tax levy of $15,000 for the Community Service Fund 80 for the 2021-22 school year were approved. The proposed levy translates into a projected mill rate of $9.77 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

The district presented a preliminary total budget of $6,910,343 for the current school year. On October 15th, the district will receive the final budget numbers from the state. In addition to the budget, audience members received updates on District enrollment numbers.

They are up 3 students from the end of 2020-21. Summer school attendance was computed to 18 full-time equivalent students. This was the result of a strong traditional summer school program and the 2 days of a district-wide Jump Start on August 30th and 31st.

They also heard summer improvement and maintenance projects. For the Elementary School:

They replaced the access drive from Begley to the start of the parking lot;

Replaced last of the old red carpet at the elementary school;

Addressed poor drainage issues by installing a drain tile in the field near Begley;

Replaced 3 classroom sinks and counters;

The Nature Center is nearing completion with plumbing and heating to be completed this fall;

Repointing of mortal in areas of need;

And added additional external security cameras.

For the High School:

They had the repointing of mortal around the building;

Patched cracks on the tennis courts;

Repaired retaining walls;

Sealed both gym floors;

Replaced the bleachers in the West Gym;

Installed a basketball hoop lift system in West Gym;

And installed acoustical tiles in the East Gym.

The District’s goals for this school year include:

Sustain in-person instruction;

Expand and enhance the use of instructional technology;

Provide quality virtual instruction if necessary;

Continue to review and update subject area curriculums;

Improve communication across the district;

And assess and plan for future district needs.

Some other actions included authorizing a tax levy of $2,326,328 for the General Fund (Fund 10) and $15,000 for the Community Service Fund (Fund 80).

They also authorized salaries of School Board members including $1,670 for President and $1,370 for all other Board positions. They also authorized reimbursement of $125 per diem reimbursement for Board members when duties require them to be absent from his or her job.

The Board also authorized the sale of obsolete school district property, authorized the Board to acquire real estate through purchase or condemnation, authorized the sale of school property, authorized the district to purchase student accident insurance for 2020-21, and authorized the 2020 annual meeting to be scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 26th of 2022.
