(Wisconsin Ag Connection) In an effort to remind farmers and motorists to be extra careful during the harvest season, Gov. Tony Evers has proclaimed September 19-25 as Wisconsin Farm Safety and Health Week.
A certificate of observance signed by the governor states that farms can be made safer through agricultural leadership and workplace safety education for farmers, agricultural workers and family members.
"Even during times of economic instability, international trade uncertainty, increasingly difficult and unpredictable weather, and a global pandemic, Wisconsin's farmers have never stopped working to feed their communities, our state, our nation and the world," Gov. Evers proclaimed.
"We are reminding all Wisconsinites of the vital importance of the safety and health of the farmers, ranchers, and workers who serve our state and our nation." The National Safety Council says the fatality rate on farms is six times higher than the combined average for all U.S. workers.
And the agency reports that some type of injury occurs on almost one in five Wisconsin farms each year, with more than 80 percent requiring medical attention.
Farm safety specialists recommend that operators equip farm machines with proper safety devices, use personal protection equipment and provide supervision for all those who work on farms.
For nearly 80 years, the U.S. has recognized the importance of farm safety and health during the month of September.
