Another Great Week in Wisconsin's Farm Fields

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Wisconsin had 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending September 5, according to the latest crop report by the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, dry weather and above normal temperatures allowed farmers to continue making hay and chop their corn silage. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated nine percent very short, 12 percent short, 68 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus.

Most of the corn is now in the dough stage or beyond and 65 percent of the crop is dented. That's one day ahead of last year and a week better than average. Seven percent of corn was mature statewide, with 75 percent rated good to excellent.

All but three percent of the soybeans are setting pods and 40 percent are changing colors. Reporters say the beans are rated 74 percent good to excellent, a slight improvement over last week.

The potato harvest is more than a third completed in the sands region of the state. And the third cutting of alfalfa hay is 93 percent complete, three days behind last year, but one day ahead of normal. Nearly half of the fourth crop is also off the fields.
