SHERMAN FIRED AFTER SIX SEASONS WITH PACK

Monday, January 2nd, 2006 -- 11:41 AM

Mike Sherman has been fired after six seasons as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

General Manager Ted Thompson announced his decision during a news conference this (Monday) morning.

He declined to comment on his specific reasons for firing Sherman, but said the 4-12 record was not the main reason. "I didn't base this decision on our record this year or the play of our players. I think the team played hard each and every week," Thompson said.

Sherman finishes with an overall record of 59-43 (.578), with seasons of 9-7, 12-4, 12-4, 10-6, 10-6 and 4-12. His teams were 2-4 in the playoffs.

Thompson said he would begin the process of interviewing candidates for the vacant position in the coming week, but refused to comment on who those candidates are.

Thompson was asked about Brett Favre?s future and roll in the decision.

"Am I going to fire Brett Favre? No. He's not a part of (the decision)," Thompson said. "Eventually, Brett Favre will retire and go back to Mississippi, but that didn't have any sway in this decision."

Thompson said he didn't discuss the firing with Favre and didn't know how he felt about it.

Of course, there?s been plenty of speculation about Favre?s future. He?s made comments recently that seemed to indicate he?d be less likely to come back for another year if Coach Sherman was fired.

Favre did not address the media after yesterday?s victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Packers players described him as very emotional after the game yesterday, but many said they believed he?d be back for at least one more year.

Coach Sherman was not a part of the press conference this morning. Sherman would address the media in the next few days, Thompson said.
