HIGHWAY FATALITIES UP THIS YEAR
Friday, December 30th, 2005 -- 8:39 AM
The state Department of Transportation says it has tallied more deaths in highway crashes in Wisconsin than a year ago with a New Year's weekend still ahead. The D-O-T recorded 788 fatalities so far this year. That's four more than occurred in all of 2004 and near the five-year average of about 800.
The agency's traffic safety analyst Dennis Hughes says it's just a horrific number. "There is way too many people dying on our roads," Hughes said.
Hughes said there was some positive news in the 2005 crash statistics. The 788 deaths so far occurred in 690 crashes _ 19 fewer than on the same date a year ago -- or a three percent drop.
