Another Great Week in Wisconsin's Farm Fields

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) The past week brought the kind of weather that farmers look forward to, as warm and dry conditions helped growers harvest small grains and make hay.
According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service also noted in its weekly crop report that some were already chopping corn for silage. Topsoil moisture levels were rated eight percent very short, 18 percent short, 66 percent adequate and eight percent surplus.
As of Sunday, about 74 percent of the state's corn crop was in the dough stage or beyond, which is two days behind last year, but nearly a week ahead of the five-year average. Twenty-three percent of corn is now dented.
The condition of the crop was rated 75 percent good to excellent, five percentage points below last week. All but 11 percent of the soybeans were setting pods and seven percent are coloring.
That crop is also rated 75 percent good to excellent, which is two percentage points lower than a week earlier. Three-quarters of the oats are now harvested, five days slower than last year, but one day better than normal.
And the third cutting of alfalfa hay is 82 percent complete, with fourth crop 20 percent off the fields.
