Governor Evers Signs Police "Use of Force" Bill
Monday, August 9th, 2021 -- 12:00 PM
(Bob Hague, WRN) Governor Tony Evers signs multiple bills into law Friday.
One new law deals with police use of force and oversight. It creates standards for when an officer may use force and deadly force, requires a duty to report use of force that violates those standards and for other officers to prevent or stop that, and creates whistleblower protections for them when they report it.
Evers also vetoed legislation that would have reduced shared revenue payments to communities that cut their law enforcement spending, citing what he called "onerous restrictions" on local governments setting their budgets.
