Wisconsin Attorney General Calls State Lawmaker's Comments on Elections Dangerous

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021 -- 11:00 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Attorney General Josh Kaul says an effort by state Republicans to investigate the state's elections system is dangerous and furthers conspiracy theories.

Attorney General Josh Kaul is calling on Congress to protect America's voting rights as multiple Republican legislatures across the country attempt to pass laws to restrict how people can vote.

Kaul says Assembly Speaker Robin Vos's election investigation is fanning the flames of the conspiracy theory that former President Trump actually won the 2020 presidential election.

"There's no doubt about the accuracy of our election results. What's going on is just an effort to add to the confusion and the uncertainty in our election processes."

Kaul says comments by former State Supreme Court justice Mike Gableman attacking the integrity of the state elections commission are ironic, since Republicans created the office.

"Created by a Republican legislature and signed into law by a Republican governor.  So this is the creation of the people who are now attacking it because they don't like the election results from 2020."

Kaul says state Republicans haven't pushed back against former President Trump's attacks against the integrity of Wisconsin's elections. "There's been silence from most of the Republican party and the rather than speaking out about what the truth is there's an effort to humor the former president through things like the investigation that Speaker Vos has announced."

Kaul says the 2020 elections were run fairly and verified through both an official audit and two recounts in WIsconsin's most populous counties. 21 other states have signed onto the letter calling for more voting rights protections.
