Seasonal Temperatures and Spotty Rainfall in Wisconsin Farm Fields Last Week

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) It was another week of seasonal temperatures around Wisconsin last week, with only spotty rainfall being reported in area farm fields.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, the weekly crop progress summary noted that farmers were busy baling and chopping hay, combining winter wheat, and harvesting processing vegetables.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated six percent very short, 19 percent short, 69 percent adequate and six percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 34 percent of the corn crop was silking statewide. That was one day ahead of last year and three days better than the five-year average.

One percent has also reached dough stage. The corn condition is now rated 76 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are reported to be 69 percent blooming, which is one day behind last year, but more than a week ahead of normal.

Twenty-eight percent of the beans are setting pods. The crop has improved slightly from a week ago at 72 percent good to excellent. Sixty-eight percent of the oats are coloring, with some growers already harvesting.

All but four percent of the winter wheat has also turned color around Wisconsin. And the second cutting of alfalfa hay is 87 percent complete, nine days ahead of both last year and the average. Farmers also have 12 percent of the third cutting complete.
