MAN SHOT, KILLED BY OFFICER NEAR HATFIELD

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005 -- 8:29 AM

One man is dead after being shot Tuesday afternoon by an officer in southern Clark County.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m. the Clark County Sheriff?s Department received a call stating there was a man with a handgun just east of Hatfield, about 15-miles southwest of Neillsville, according to a press release.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the subject pointed a handgun at the deputies and gunfire was exchanged. A pursuit ensued with the man on foot. He allegedly tried to gain entry into at least one home near Lake Arbutus in southwestern Clark County, witnesses say.

The man was shot and killed by officers after a final exchange of gunfire, according to the press release.

Paul Gilbert of Onalaska was working on his parents cabin on Lark Arbutus when his quiet afternoon came to an end at around 2:45 p.m.

?I was outside, working in my shed. All of a sudden, I heard ?get in your house?,? Gilbert said. ?There were at least twelve cop cars out here. All they said was there was an armed gunman out there.?

Gilbert saw a man in blaze orange about 100-yards from his property, but he?s not sure if this as the man officers referred to as the ?gunman?. There were numerous gunshots fired in rapid succession, Gilbert says.

?There were three rapid ones right at the start,? Gilbert said. ?There were probably six more at another point. There was probably a 15- to 20-minute gap in between.?

?It?s been interesting ? let?s put it that way. When you see cops running up with their guns drawn. Shotguns and handguns. It was quite a shock. It?s very rarely that we have this many cars in a week up here,? Gilbert said.

The Sheriff?s Department is not releasing the name of the victim and it?s unclear what prompted the incident.
