(Raymond Neupert, WRN) The State Department of Justice will be more aggressively pursuing fair housing cases in Wisconsin.
The State Department of Justice will be more aggressively pursuing fair housing cases in Wisconsin. Attorney General Josh Kaul says the partnership with the Department of Workforce development will better help residents facing discrimination.
"In a few prior administrations the authority that DOJ has to enforce these laws wasn't used, but we are using that Authority again to protect Wisconsinites."
Kaul says that the DOJ has left those claims to other agencies in the last several administrations, but that Wisconsin's vulnerable populations deserve justice.
"Our state agencies, both DWD and DOJ, are working to address these cases when they arise and if people are aware of issues that we encourage them to report them to the appropriate action can be taken."
Kaul says the agency hasn't been doing that for a number of years, and it's time for the DOJ to step up. "Having our chief law enforcement agency enforcing those laws reaffirms our values and for individuals who are being discriminated against it can make the difference between whether they're able to stay in their house or not."
Kaul says this will be a continued partnership between the DOJ and the Department of Workforce Development, which handles those cases right now.
