The Clark County Chapter of the Friends of the Black River asks users of the river to be kind to the wildlife that call the river home.

Recently, a snapping turtle was found dead in a public fishing spot in Neillsville. Snapping turtles are freshwater reptiles with no natural enemies. A snapping turtle of the size discovered can be 50+ years old. They can easily live up to 100 years old and have a maximum life span of 170 years.

Once a snapping turtle reaches adulthood it has a 98.7% to 99% chance to live a long life. The DNR already had a report about this turtle and feels this one was caught out of season and killed.

The Friends of the Black River are glad to see that more eyes are watching our waterways and people are willing to speak up when they encounter wrongdoing.  Again, they remind people to please be kind to our river and the wildlife.
