Clark County One of Lowest in the State for Vaccination Rates

Wednesday, July 7th, 2021 -- 2:01 PM

(Bob Hague, WRN) About half the eligible population in Wisconsin has yet to get even a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine - and remain vulnerable to the disease.

Dr. Ryan Westergaard, the state's chief medical officer, explains the strategy to get more shots in arms. "Be welcoming of people who have questions about whether they should get a vaccine, be prepared to have those conversations, and be prepared to provide the vaccine when people are ready."

Westergaard says it's a more decentralized approach. "So that's really going to be the key strategy of getting the second half our state vaccinated, is people having conversations with the providers they trust, at the places where they recieve health care."

Dr. Ryan Westergaard continued, "If we want to save as many lives as we can, we need have a consistent message for the whole state, and the whole state should hear the message that as many people as possible to get vaccinated is not only going to protect them, but other people in their community who might be vulnerable to severe disease."

Rates for those fully vaccinated vary widely by county. Dane, Door and Bayfield counties are all over 60 percent. In Clark and Taylor counties, fewer than 30 percent are fully vaccinated.
