Friday, November 25th, 2005 -- 12:08 PM
The state's last remaining World War I veteran has died. Arthur Fiala of the Kewaunee area died Wednesday at the age of 106. According to state records, Fiala had been the only surviving state veteran of World War I since the death of Ben Moldenhauer of Fort Atkinson in August 2004 at the age of 107. Fiala enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1918 and was sent to France. He was in the French Alps cutting logs and railroad ties for fortifications at the front. Speaking with reporters last year, Fiala credited peanuts and brandy for his longevity.Feel free to contact us with questions and/or comments.
