Field Work Able to Resume in Wisconsin Thanks to Dry Weather

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020 -- 10:08 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Farmers had to deal with another week of cooler temperatures as they finished their soybean harvest and reached the half-way mark for combining corn.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's weekly crop report stated that dry, windy days cleared up most of the snow and excess soil moisture that fell in late-October, which allowed for fieldwork to resume. Dairy producers were also ahead of normal with manure spreading. Topsoil moisture levels were rated one percent very short, eight percent short, 81 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus. As of Sunday, 55 percent of the corn for grain was finished. That's more than three weeks ahead of last year and six days better than the five-year average.

The moisture content of corn was reported at 20 percent. Only nine percent of the soybeans remain in the fields, which is also a month ahead of the previous year and two weeks ahead of schedule. Seventy-eight percent of the winter wheat was emerged and looking mostly good to excellent statewide. And farmers are now 49 percent done with their fall tillage activity.
