Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005 -- 9:37 AM
Wisconsin deer hunters killed about 8,000 more deer than they did a year ago on the opening weekend of the state?s nine-day gun-deer season.A preliminary count at deer registration stations across the state showed hunters registered 161,286 deer in the first two days, compared with 153,462 in 2004. However, the tally is expected to change when all registration stubs are submitted and entered into the Department of Natural Resources new registration database.
Hunters in Clark County harvested 2,817 bucks and 3,191 does for a total of 6,008 total deer, a 25-percent increase from last year when a total of 4,805 whitetails were harvested.
In the West Central Region, around 65,500 deer were harvested during opening weekend; last year, about 59,000 were shot.
