MEMORIAL NURSING HOME HAS NEW NAME, ATTITUDE

A new name symbolizes a new mindset at Memorial Medical Center ?Health and Rehab? facility. Formerly known as the Memorial ?Nursing Home?, Health and Rehab is part of a growing number of facilities adopting a different philosophy in care for the elderly, and those that can?t care for themselves. It puts more emphasis on rehabilitation and a return to a more independent home setting. Mark Reinhardt is the director of Physical Therapy at Memorial Medical Center, he says people shouldn?t worry, this is just a name change that represents change in attitude.
"It's a place of transition. People are going into the setting only for two to three weeks as they rehab themselves to get back into a home standing," Reinhardt says. "(Then) they come to our therapy area as an out patient."
Reinhardt says the former mindset was if you check into a nursing home, you?ll never leave. That's no longer the case.
Governor Jim Doyle announced last week that the Department of Health and Family Services is on target to move over 1,400 people out of nursing homes and into community-based settings over the next two years as called for in his Community Relocation Initiative.
