STOP UNWANTED CREDIT CARD OFFERS

Thursday, November 17th, 2005 -- 10:46 AM

Are you sick of being bombarded by credit card offers? Well, there?s away to get rid of those nuisance envelopes.

Jenny Jakel of Abby Bank in Abbotsford will be leading a Basic Banking workshop as part of a series of financial workshops sponsored by the Clark County UW-Extension office. While Jakel will be talking about savings accounts, checking accounts, credit scores and loan applications, she?ll also touch on credit cards.

Studies indicated the average American?s credit card debt is over $9,000.

"That's a frightening number for me," Jakel says. "You should only have a credit care when you need to have one. One or two credit cards is enough."

"A lot of times you get in a department store and they offer you discounts, but all of a sudden, you have a wallet full of credit cards. It's not the payments that kill you, it's the late-charges and the interest that adds on."

And while most people are familiar with the ?no call list?, fewer are aware they can avoid most junk mail, including credit card solicitations.

"The first thing I tell everyone to do is write in to the Direct Marketing Association and get your name removed from the solicitation list. If you're not getting the credit card offers in the mail, the temptation is not there to take advantage of them."

You can actually get your name off those lists by visiting the Direct Marketing Association?s website.
