GRANTON CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK
Tuesday, November 15th, 2005 -- 11:32 AM
What could be seen as an education "experiment" is coming to an end in Granton. The school board voted unanimously Monday night to do away with ?block scheduling? and return to a standard school day. For about nine years, school days in Granton were divided into 4, hour-and-a-half ?blocks? instead of the typical 8, 45-minute-period school day. Blocks are utilized by a handful of schools around the state. They allow students to take more in-depth classes stretched over a short period of time. Granton Superintendent Jerry Nelson says the school had more of a ?modified block? schedule with more modifications made every year. As of next fall, Granton will return to a typical school day, though teachers will be allowed to offer ?dual hour? classes. Nelson says constant modifications to the schedule will make this more of a change in label than change in schedule.Feel free to contact us with questions and/or comments.
