Tax Levy Approved at Greenwood School District's Annual Meeting

-The Greenwood School Board held their Annual Meeting Monday evening.A small audience approved a proposed tax levy of $2,375,177 for the General Fund and a tax levy of $15,000 for the Community Service Fund 80 for the 2020-21 school year at the district’s annual meeting held Monday September 28th. The proposed levy translates into a projected mill rate of $10.30 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The district presented a preliminary total budget of $6,216,783 for the current school year. On October 15th the district will receive the final budget numbers from the state. In addition to the budget, audience members received updates on district enrollment numbers. The district is down 8 students from the end of 2019-20. Summer school attendance was down due to a shortened summer school calendar. They also heard about summer improvements and maintenance projects. New Carpet was installed in the five rooms at the elementary school and the Business Ed room at the high school. They repurposed front fencing at the elementary school to a softball field. They addressed drainage issues with new culverts along the access drive. Finally, they replaced the West Gym entry doors and 2 exterior doors and replaced all lights in the district with LED as an energy savings measure. Those present also heard about the Greenwood Way Forward, which is the School Reopening Plan, and both schools received Marshfield Clinic’s 3 C’s Seal of Approval as COVID Compliant Facilities.
The audience also heard the goals for 2020-21, which include the successful return to in-person instruction, implementation of the 1:1 Device Initiative, provide quality virtual instruction if necessary, continue to review and update subject area curriculums, improve communication across the district and assess and plan for future district needs. Some other actions the board and audience approved included authorizing the salaries of the school board members, with $1,670 for the president and $1,370 for all the other board positions). They also authorized the reimbursement of $125 per diem for board members when duties require them to be absent from his or her job. They also authorized the sale of obsolete school district property and authorized the Board to acquire real estate through purchase or condemnation. The board also authorized the sale of school property. An amendment was offered to require a referendum to authorize sale of school property. The amendment failed due to the lack of a second and the original motion passed. Finally, they authorized the district to purchase student accident insurance for 2020-21 and authorized the 2020 annual meeting to be scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 27th of 2021.
