GRANTON SCHOOL CHIEF: LEGISLATURE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT FIXING SCHOOL FUNDING PROBLEMS
Friday, October 28th, 2005 -- 8:38 AM
A Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance study concludes the state could make some changes that would help suffering districts including:-Adjusting the revenue-limit law to provide relief for declining-enrollment districts, noting districts have little control over things like fuel and utility costs, which are generally rising faster than the revenue-limit caps
-Increasing transportation aid to sparsely populated districts
-offering additional incentives to consolidate services with other districts.
Granton Superintendent Jerry Nelson says agrees with the study, but he?s not sure the state legislature wants to deal with the issue.
"I don't think the ones in the majority at this time really care," Nelson says. "I don't think they're really geared at making a real true effort to resolve educational problems in our state."
The study found 117 of 'Wisconsin's' 426 districts report declining fund balances.
