Neillsville School Board Approves Resource Officer for the District

Tuesday, September 1st, 2020 -- 9:08 AM

-The Neillsville School Board began their meeting on Monday with the introduction of some new staff members.

The board then discussed a resource officer for the district. The district was contacted by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department about a grant they received from Marshfield. The grant is for 3 years and will pay for 100% of the cost in the first year, 50% the second year and 15% of the cost the final year. However, the sheriff’s department, with involvement of the Neillsville Police Department, would find the funding to pay for the reminder of the cost. If they can’t find the money, the district is able to get out of the agreement. The position would not be full time. Granton is also interested in having a resource officer, so it was suggested the officer would be shared between the districts. The purpose of the resource officer would not be to act as just enforcement and discipline, but help students build a human connection with officers and educate about the laws.

District Administrator John Gaier has met with the officer. He’s been a resource officer at other districts. The board approved the resource officer for the next three years. The board also approved the purchase of a new van for $37,181. The van is typically used by staff members and administration for several different purposes including transporting small groups of students, professional development opportunities, sports equipment and more. This was the lowest bid and there was no trade-in.
