Wisconsin Fields Finally Received Some Much Needed Rain

Tuesday, September 1st, 2020 -- 9:06 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Dry areas throughout the Badger State finally got some needed rain during the past week.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's weekly crop report said Monday that multiple showers interrupted fieldwork, but brought moisture in areas that needed it the most. Storm totals ranged between 3 to 8 inches in isolated areas. Corn silage chopping and winter wheat planting were underway as the small grain harvest neared completion. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 10 percent very short, 19 percent short, 65 percent adequate and six percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 88 percent of the corn was at dough stage or beyond, over four weeks ahead of last year and 11 days better than the five-year average. Corn dented was 45 percent, 17 days further along than 2019 and four days ahead of normal. Farmers now have eight percent of the corn for silage chopped.

All but four percent of the soybeans have set pods. That's also four weeks ahead of the last growing season and eight days ahead of average. Twenty percent of the beans were coloring, nearly two weeks ahead of last year and four days ahead of usual. The oat harvest is nearly complete and winter wheat planting is off to a good start with 12 percent of that crop in the ground. About 28 percent of the potatoes were also picked in the Central Sands area. And the fourth cutting of alfalfa was reported as 22 percent complete, four days ahead of last year, but five days behind the average.
