Neillsville City Council Discusses Request for Estate Sale at Schuster Park

Thursday, August 20th, 2020 -- 9:09 AM

-The Neillsville City Council heard a request from a resident to use the north pavilion in Schuster Park for an estate sale September 21st-26th.

The resident also wanted to sleep at the park to watch their stuff. Neillsville Mayor Diane Murphy stated that she is not in support of this as it would set a precedence for camping in the park. One alderman questioned why they would have an estate sale in a park and stay there? The resident stated that her folks lived too far out into the country down two side roads and they wanted to stay with our stuff. It was stated that Heritage Days has had sales, but an alderman stated that Heritage Days is a city function. The resident had stated that she had contacted Clark County about renting the fairgrounds, but they could not afford it. She said they need a roof and tables out of the rain. The mayor stated Heritage Days is non-profit and this would be a for profit sale. Another alderman stated a multi-day event with staying over is pushing the boundary to setting a precedence and another questioned why this request ever came before the council and why it hadn’t been referred to the Parks and Recreation Board for review?

However, the alderman went on to say the family was well respected in the community, city workers get paid to clean up the parks and he has no concern with the overnight camping request. He is all for allowing the request; they should be able to do it. Another alderman asked if the resident had checked with other businesses or the American Legion. She replied she had not checked with the Legion. Finally, an alderman motioned to have this request reviewed by the Parks and Recreation Board. The Mayor called for a second, but there was none, so the motion died from lack of a second. No further action was taken on the item.
