(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -It can be said that farmers in the Badger State are seeing their best stretch of good growing conditions in years. And according to the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service's latest crop progress report, last week was no different. The summery stated that showers interrupted fieldwork briefly in some areas, but weather was still conducive for hay making and combining small grains. Topsoil moisture levels were rated six percent very short, 22 percent short, 67 percent adequate and five percent surplus. With nearly all of the corn silked, two-thirds of the crop is now at dough stage. That's 16 days ahead of last year and nearly a week further along than average. About 84 percent of the corn is in good to excellent condition, which is slightly ahead of last week.
Eighty-three percent of the soybeans had set pods--19 days better than a year ago and two days ahead of the five-year average. Eighty-five percent of that crop is reported to be good to excellent. About 72 percent of the oats have been harvested, 15 days ahead of 2019 and five days ahead of normal. Winter wheat growers have combined 94 percent of their crop. And the third cutting of alfalfa was 72 percent complete, 11 days ahead of last year and equal to the average for mid-August. The condition of the hay is rated 81 percent good to excellent statewide.
