Wisconsin Attorney General Joins Coalition Fighting Current Administration's Restrictions on Certain Immigrants

Tuesday, August 11th, 2020 -- 9:07 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul has joined a coalition of 22 other attorneys generals around the country in fighting against the current Administration's April 22 order that restricts certain immigrants from entering the country.

In a brief supporting the plaintiffs in Gomez., et al. v. Trump, the coalition calls for an injunction against the enforcement of two executive orders that would suspend large swathes of the nation's immigration system and several of its non-immigrant work visa programs. The coalition argues that the participation of immigrants and other foreign-born employees in the workforce is critical to economic development, and that the order will prolong the separation of families. According to a statement by the DOJ officials, the President banned from entry "immigrants being sponsored by U.S. citizens or permanent resident family members, by their employers, or who had won the diversity visa lottery." The order was set to expire in 60 days, but was renewed on June 22.

Meanwhile, the White House said in a statement at the time that the orders only restrict non-immigrants who are outside the United States at the time and who do not have a valid visa or a valid travel document, such as a transportation letter, boarding foil or an advance parole. Excluded from the proclamation are lawful green card holders, spouses or children of a United States citizen, and foreign nationals entering the country to provide temporary labor or services essential to the U.S. food supply chain.
