(WDLB) -A tribute to the founder of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother has received Marshfield's annual Historic Preservation Stewardship Award.During last night's meeting of the Common Council, Vickie Schnitzler, the Chairperson of the city's Historic Preservation Committee, presented the award to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for its work on the new Mother Frances Streitel Center located in the basement of the church at 201 West Blodgett Street. Sisters Barbara and Rita accepted the award last night, on behalf of St. John's. The new Mother Frances Streitel Center and John Paul The Second Adoration Chapel was completed in early 2019, in memory and celebration of the many women of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother who staffed the former St. Joseph's Hospital, cared for many area families, and taught many young women who followed in their footsteps as graduates of the School of Nursing.
The new center incorporates stained glass windows and statuary that once graced the chapel and halls of St. Joe's. Mother Frances Streitel was the founder of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, who came to Marshfield from Germany in 1890 at the request of the bishop of La Crosse to establish the hospital. The Historic Preservation Stewardship recognition program began back in 2007, aimed at educating the public on the community's historic resources, and to promote an awareness and support for historic preservation.
