Another Week of Humid Temperatures and Some Rain Make Wisconsin Crops Happy
Tuesday, July 14th, 2020 -- 9:07 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Humid conditions and plenty of rain during the past week made for excellent crop growth. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted in its latest crop progress report that daytime temperatures reached the 80s and 90s for most of the week. But heavy downpours flattened some crops and caused ponding in isolated areas. Topsoil moisture levels were rated one percent very short, nine percent short, 78 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 10 percent of the state's corn crop was silking. That's nine days ahead of last year and one day better than the five-year average. About 81 percent of the corn was in good to excellent condition statewide, up two percentage points from a week ago.
Sixty-one percent of the soybeans were blooming--three weeks ahead of this time in 2019 and 11 days ahead of normal. So far, 13 percent of the beans were setting pods. Small grains continue to thrive, with 93 percent of the oats now headed and over half changing color. The winter wheat has also changed color in 87 percent of its acreage. And farmers now have 62 percent of their second hay crop harvested. Only 76 percent of the alfalfa was in good to excellent condition, according to the weekly summary.
