Granton Village Board Discusses Fall Fest
Friday, July 10th, 2020 -- 9:19 AM
-The Granton Village Board heard an update on Fall Fest at their meeting on Wednesday.According to the unofficial minutes from the meeting, Fall Fest has been canceled due to the COVID Virus. Also noted was that Loyal’s Corn Fest and the County Fair have also been canceled due to COVID. The softball association requested that the village board allow the Fall Fest Ball tournament to continue, which was approved. Also, the village had no update on their dump truck. The village also heard an update on a chemical for their water system. The village started injecting the chemical July 1st. They are injecting 1 gallon per day, over a 24 hour period, into pond 3. The next sample will be taken in October and this will be their chance to see the success rate of this chemical. It was also noted that the new pump they purchased to inject the chemical is running hot. The outside air temps and humidity have been very elevated which has not helped. They have shut the pump off periodically throughout the day to cool it a bit and left the building door open with limited success. The village also reviewed, and approved, liquor and operator licenses that were received after the deadline. The board also reviewed a resident’s request to run cattle on his property in the village.
The board discussed this request and even though the property is on the edge of town, they did not want to set a precedent for future requests for other residents. Also noted was the Amish had approached the village last year and asked to run cattle at the old Cantrell place and no exceptions were made for them. The ruling that no farm animals are allowed in the village stands. The board also discussed vacant properties. The board made a decision in 2016 that properties vacant for 1 year or more will not incur base water or sewer charges. The thought was that this would allow the owners to fix up the place and get it sold or rented. Unfortunately, this has not worked in the best interest of the village. There are several vacant locations that have been vacant for many years. This agenda item will be reviewed in August when all board members are present. Finally, the clerk advised that they should ask the TID Engineer to come to a meeting to update the rules as the TID will expire in 2028 and expenses need to be assigned by 2023.
