CLARK CO. HORSES TEST POSITIVE FOR WNV

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005 -- 2:07 PM

September is the peak month for West Nile Virus infections. So far this year, the Centers for Disease for Control have confirmed 4 human cases of the mosquito-borne illness here in Wisconsin. There was a total of twelve cases last year.

Meanwhile, Clark County health officials say two horses have been confirmed to have the virus; Chippewa County officials report West Nile has been confirmed in a dead crow found on August 29th.

The virus is transmitted through mosquitos who feed on infected birds.

Experts encourage people to be more vigilant in preventing mosquito bites by keeping window screens in good repair, wearing light colored clothing and avoiding the outdoors around dawn and dusk. Most people infected with the virus either don't get sick or experience mild symptoms and less than 1% get seriously ill.
