Wisconsin's Maple Syrup Production Down

Following a banner year after the long winter of 2019, Wisconsin's maple syrup production only totaled 265,000 gallons this spring, about 5,000 gallons less than the previous season.Wisconsin Ag Connection reports that the number of taps also decreased by 20,000 this year to 780,000. Last year, an all-time high of 800,000 taps were drilled into state maple trees. Newly released figures show that yield was 0.340 gallons per tap, slightly higher from last season's sap content. Last year, the average price Wisconsin maple syrup producers received was $33.50 per gallon, up 40-cents from 2018.
The 2020 Wisconsin maple syrup season began on February 15 and ended on April 26. That was five days longer than last year's harvest window. Wisconsin ranks fourth nationally for maple syrup production, only trailing Vermont, New York and Maine.
