NEILLSVILLE GRADUATE LIVED THROUGH HURRICANE
Tuesday, September 6th, 2005 -- 12:24 PM
A 2005 Neillsville graduate lived through Hurricane Katrina. Dan Larsen, a member of the Army National Guard?s 128th infantry, has been training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, for the last few weeks. The training facility is located just outside of Hattiesburg, about 50 miles from the Gulf Coast. Dan?s mother, Cheryl Larsen of Neillsville, says the Camp took a direct hit last Monday."You could hear the shingles coming off the roof. He saw a huge satellite dish fly by their windows. All they could do is stay in their barracks," Cheryl Larsen says. She actually talked to Dan during the storm.
The barracks included walls built to withstand 90-mile per hour winds.
The troops spent a few days cleaning up, but are already back to training in oppressively hot and humid conditions. Larsen says the Hurricane hasn?t changed the National Guards deployment plans.
"It is still on schedule."
The unit is expected to be deployed in November.
